What to Watch for the Holidays

By Nicholas Kim

It’s December, school is almost over, and everyone will get to relax over the holidays by watching the best recommended movies for Christmas. Here is the list of what is best to watch:

Die Hard

Even though Die Hard is not a Christmas movie due to its release on July 15, 1988, it has been critically re-evaluated and is considered one of the best action films ever made. The screenwriter confirmed that it is a Christmas movie due to the film’s events taking place on Christmas Eve. New York City policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) tries to save his wife and several others that have been taken hostage by German terrorists during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. For those who love cop action movies and the view of the world through law enforcement, Die Hard is the perfect movie to watch.

It’s a Wonderful Life

Since its release on January 7, 1947, It’s A Wonderful Life has become one of the best Christmas movies ever made. An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman named George Bailey (James Stewart) by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed and how he should be grateful for the life he has now. This film expertly contrasts the American small-town ideal with its occasional failures to embody its best self. Since the events of the ending of the film takes place on Christmas Eve, it's safe to say that it ends on a moment of bittersweet catharsis, but is also wise enough to know that life is long, and life can often be disappointing or wonderful.

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of 21 films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, should be worthy enough to watch during the holidays. Since COVID-19 hit the world, many movies have been delayed including the next MCU movie Black Widow. Unfortunately, fans couldn’t see any new Marvel movies this year, but Avengers: Endgame should be rewatched due to how well written and directed it was, and how it topped Avatar for highest grossing films of all time. Even though the film is three hours, it is still worth it to see superheroes fighting no matter what. A perfect family movie.

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 had been delayed a few times due to COVID-19 and was almost about to be delayed again until Warner Bros. and HBO decided to release the film on HBO Max as well as theaters. What a surprise, DC fans will finally get to see the new superhero movie on December 25, 2020. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) squares off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah, a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility. Even though it’s not a Christmas movie, the film being released on Christmas Day is such a wonderful gift for those who couldn’t watch any of the movies they looked forward to before COVID-19 caused delays. Thank you to Warner Bros. and HBO for allowing Wonder Woman 1984 to be available on HBO Max.

These are the recommended movies to watch during the holidays. There are plenty of other Christmas movies to watch besides the ones on the list, but if you are looking for a film to watch, check these ones out first.

American Dream or American Nightmare?

Many foreigners grow up hearing about how America is the greatest country in the world, and that anyone can come here and achieve their dreams. For many of our ancestors, this was true, but is it different now?
